How heat control window film works
Heat control window film is a thin 3M film that goes on the inside of your windows and rejects part of the sun’s energy before it reaches the room. Infrared is about 53% of the sun’s energy coming through the glass, and it’s the part you feel as heat. 3M films like Affinity 15 reject up to 83% of the sun’s energy at the glass.
3M home film also blocks up to 99.9% of UV light, the main cause of fading on floors, rugs and furniture. And the right film does all of that without making the house look dark from the street or dim from the couch.
Heat control film, sun control film and solar film are three names for the same thing. 3M calls it sun control film. Whatever the name, it’s film that stops the sun’s heat at the glass.
Heat control window film for San Antonio homes
The rooms that suffer most are the ones facing west, in the late afternoon. That’s when the sun comes in low and straight through the glass, and the air conditioner runs from lunch until dinner trying to keep up. Every San Antonio house seems to have one room the family quietly gives up on from June to September. It’s usually the one with the nicest windows, and by 4pm even the dog has moved out.

Darker isn't always cooler
Prestige blocks heat in nearly clear shades, so you don’t have to darken anything to cool a room down. That’s why we test the samples under the heat lamp instead of just holding them up to the light.
Heat control film for offices, storefronts and other buildings
An estimated 28% of cooling costs come from solar heat coming in through the windows. 3M Sun Control Window Film rejects that heat at the glass, cuts the glare and slows the fading on furniture and floors. The building gets more comfortable, and the AC gets a break.
Every office with west-facing glass has a thermostat with a Post-it note on it, and nobody will admit to writing it. Film won’t end the argument, but it does make 3pm a lot less heated.

Lower cooling costs with a fast payback
The U.S. Department of Energy considers window film a top-tier technology for saving energy, with one of the fastest paybacks around, about three years. With 3M window film, that can mean $1 to $2 saved per square foot of film installed, or as much as 19 kWh per square foot of glass.
Those are general figures, not a promise about your power bill. What you save depends on the glass, which way it faces and the film you pick. A steadier temperature inside also means the AC works less, which can stretch its life.
The math works the same on a house as on an office building. The difference is the size of the job, and the bigger the job, the lower the price per square foot.
What heat control film will and won't do
Heat control film stops a share of the sun’s heat at the glass. It doesn’t cool the house by itself, and it can’t fix heat coming in through the attic or an old AC unit. If that’s the real problem, we’ll tell you at the quote. Film fixes the glass, and I won’t sell it to you as a fix for the roof.
Dual-pane and low-e windows need a film chosen for them, which is why we look at your windows before we recommend one. Bring your window warranty paperwork and we’ll go through it with you.

How a heat control job goes
Here’s what to expect, from the first call to the last clean-up.
- A free quote. Homes get a visit with the samples and the heat lamp. Businesses get a site survey and a written quote.
- Picking the film. We match the film to the glass, the direction it faces and how much light you want to keep.
- The install. Every window gets cleaned, and the film is cut to each pane so it fits edge to edge. Most homes are done in a day. Most commercial jobs can happen after hours or over a weekend.
- Old film. If there’s old film that’s bubbled or turned purple, it comes off first. For businesses, we’ll also remove old film on its own.
- The warranty. Home film carries a lifetime film warranty. Commercial warranties depend on the film, and most run 12 to 15 years.
